Alexander Technique (AT) is a learning method that works with habits of movement, stillness,
muscle engagement, and thought.
This provides less tension, more energy, more ease, and more joy.
You can also learn more on
my YouTube channel.

AT is helpful for all sorts of people:

People who do repetitive movements

Performers

Athletes

People who sit at a desk all day

People with chronic pain, tension, and fatigue

People recovering from injury, surgery, and trauma

People who are curious about the way they move

People who want to work on self-care

What we do:

Usually, we start by taking a look at how you approach doing basic everyday movements, like standing, sitting, walking, bending, and lying down. These are our functional building-block movements that we use all the time. As you continue with lessons, we start to apply these building-block movements to your activities in order to improve HOW you engage with those activities. I use both my hands and my words to guide students into new patterns of coordination. If a student does not want to be touched, we can just work verbally. Students are always in charge of their own bodies, and any “no” will be immediately respected.

AT can be practiced:

without standing up

no matter your body size

with tissue, nerve, or brain damage

with cognitive disabilities

with chronic pain or illness

AT is for everyone.

Time commitment:

AT is taught mostly in 1-on-1 private lessons. Lessons are generally once a week, for 30-45 minutes depending on the person. The more consistently you can be there, the better your results will be. Habits do not change overnight, and it takes time to learn the skills to change them. Think of it like piano lessons: if you just want to learn to play a couple basic tunes, that can be accomplished in a few weeks. If you want a higher degree of control, fluidity, and subtlety, that will take much longer. A good place to start is 10 lessons.

Cost:

My current rate is $60 per 30 minute lesson, or $75 for a 45 minute lesson. I offer discounts for packages of 10 lessons, and discounts if you come more than once a week. Please contact me and we can talk about it.

Can this be done with online video calls?

Yes, although online lessons do tend to have limits in how strong the results are. If at all possible I prefer to have at least 3 lessons in person before going online, but as always, I’m open to trying.

Is there an age limit?

No limit. Kids younger than 12 will likely need to have shorter, more frequent lessons. There’s no upper age limit.

What else should students know?

If a student doesn't speak English, if a student is blind or deaf, or if a student has special needs, interpreters or caretakers are welcome to come along. Helpers would need to agree to have a conversation about how best to interact during a lesson.

About Jess:

I trained at Alexander Technique Denver, which is a minimum 1600-hour, 3-year program, recognized nationally by the American Society for Alexander Technique (AmSAT) and internationally by the Alexander Technique affiliated societies. My background is in the performing arts, as well as managing several chronic medical conditions with a wide variety of impacts. I discovered AT in college at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, and continued to take lessons on and off for 10 years before making AT my primary focus. I completed my AT teacher training in 2022. I also teach AT to music students at the Lamont School of Music.

One thing I love about AT is how it gives me the means to have ownership over myself. No matter how my habits got started, my power lies in my ability to make a new choice. I can choose to do something different.
